Game recap: Saint Joseph’s Hawks steal a late win against Spiders

Philadelphia: The grind of conference play continues on and we had an interesting battle on Wednesday night as the Saint Joseph’s Hawks took on the Richmond Spiders from Hagan Arena on the Campus of Saint Joseph’s University. The Hawks come into the game with an 8-10, 1-5 in A10 and off a loss to Saint Louis on January 18 while the Spiders head into battle with the Hawks with 7-11, 1-4 in A10 and off a loss to Davidson on January 19.

Richmond won the tip to start the game and they would score right away, Hawks gets on the board with a 3 pointer by Charlie Brown. Hawks got off to a good start, which their last couple games have started off slow. After the 1st media timeout, Richmond would go on a 16-0 run and take a 21-10 lead and the Hawks would end the run on a basket by Chris Clover which made it 21-12 lead for the Spiders. The Hawks just did not have an answer for the Spiders would go get the lead to 29-15. The Hawks would go on a run to cut into the lead but the Spiders would have an answer and Richmond would take a 43-31 lead into halftime.

In the second half would be the same as the first half, Richmond gets off fast and the Hawks try to catch them. Hawks would go on an 8-0 run and cut the Spiders lead down to 6 at 52-46. The Hawks would retake the lead on 3 by Taylor Funk for a 57-56 lead with 9:26 left. Back and forth action down the stretch.  With under 6 minutes left, the Hawks would get a minor score as Charlie Brown would go down with an injury

Brown would return to the game with 3:19 left as the Hawks are down 68-61.  Charlie Brown makes 2 at the line to get the lead down to 1 at 68-67 with 1:18 left. Spiders would answer the run by the Hawks with the basket from Grant Golden which made it 70-67 with 55 seconds left. Hawks tie the game at 70 on 3 by Taylor Funk with 34.3 left. It would come down to the final shot and the Hawks would get fouled with 1.6 left and Jared Bynum made 2 at the line for 72-70. Hawks would rally back and steal this game from the Spiders with a 74-70 win.

The Hawks are now 9-10, 2-5 in A10 and will now head to battle with the Penn Quakers on Saturday, January 26 at the Palestra while the Spiders fall to 7-12, 1-5 in A10 and will try to rebound from this loss as they take on St. Bonaventure also on January 26.
