Flyers Weekly Mailbag: What would it take to bring Nylander to Philadelphia?

Finalllllllly. Jeez Louise it only took 13 games for the Flyers to obtain their first winning streak of the season. It’s a feeling of relief after defeating the Los Angeles Kings and the injured Anaheim Ducks, and it seems to be what the doctor ordered for a once struggling Flyers team.

The once leaky Defense and inconsistent Goaltending hopefully are things of the past. Somethings that are never too early to talk about are trade talks. Of course, everyone in Philadelphia wants to know are the Flyers interested in the Leafs William Nylander? Without further delay, here are our answers to your questions.

The Flyers are currently not major players for William Nylander at this time. However, I’m pretty positive Ron Hextall has at the very least inquired about his services, as General Manager of the Leafs Kyle Dubas attended a Flyers game last week, when the orange and black played the Colorado Avalanche. Right off the bat Toronto will start the conversation with either Ivan Provorov or Shayne Gostisbehere. Hextall may, and this is a stretch be able to squeeze Travis Sanheim instead, but that would be pure luck. The Leafs are looking for young Defenseman that have NHL seasoning. One area of need for this strong Leafs club is Defense, in particular a young Defenseman. Here’s what a trade would most likely look like:

Leafs Get: Provorov/Ghost/Sanheim, A pick (Depends on which Defenseman departs)

Flyers Get: Nylander, A pick

I loveeeee the jokes in regards to trading Dave Hakstol, and some Flyers players for Nylander. It’s been a tough start to the season for many people, so most people can use these jokes at this time. It’s never a dull moment in Flyer land.

Barry thanks so much for your support. God bless you and your family. I pray for you daily Barry with all you do at work.

I would love to obtain Nylander, however I don’t think the Flyers are deep enough on the Defensive side of the puck just yet to depart with a young Defenseman. The Leafs are currently looking for a young Defenseman that has some NHL seasoning. The Flyers have a lot of young unknown talented prospects who are on the verge of the NHL with the likes of Mark Friedman and Philippe Myers. However, what if Myers or Friedman do not pan out, then the Flyers are really in trouble if they parted with one of these premier young Defensemen in either Provorov/Ghost/Sanheim. I personally believe Myers will be an excellent NHL Defenseman when he gets his shot, but it’s still unknown. A trade might look like this:

Leafs Get: Provorov/Ghost/Sanheim, A pick (Depends on which Defenseman departs)

Flyers Get: Nylander, A pick

The Flyers definitely have what the Leafs want, but I don’t think were deep enough in that area to sustain the loss of one of these premier young Defensemen in either Provorov/Sanheim/Ghost.

In the early going of the Flyers season. The Defense has certainly been inconsistent. One game they are solid, the next game not so much. This goes for every Defenseman with the exceptions to Travis Sanheim and Radko Gudas. Both of these Defenseman certainly have been the most consistent in this young season. Ivan Provorov looks to be returning to form after putting together two good games against the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings respectively.

To help aid the young Defensive corps of the Flyers I would love to pick up Christopher Tanev from the Vancouver Canucks. Yes, he has had his fair share of injuries, but when healthy Tanev is a stud. Tanev could fetch a first to a second round pick if he remains healthy. With that being said, that may be too rich for Ron Hextalls blood as he loves his draft picks (Joking). Anton Stralman would be another Defenseman I would love to add as he’s a righty, however it’s more likely than not that Tampa Bay resigns him at year’s end. Here are some Defenseman that may interest the Flyers:

Christopher Tanev (Van)– Modified NTC, 1 year remaining with a cap hit of $4.45 million

Alec Martinez (LAK)- 2 years remaining with a cap hit of $4 million.

Tyler Myers (WPG)- UFA 2019, Cap Hit $5.5 million

Jay Bouwmeester (STL)-  UFA 2019, Cap Hit $4.4 million

Jake Gardiner (TOR)- UFA 2019, Cap Hit $4.050 million (Unlikely, but still)

Alexander Edler (VAN)- UFA 2019, Cap Hit $5 million

Marc Methot (DAL)- UFA 2019, Cap Hit $4.9 million

Anton Stralman (TAM)- UFA 2019, Cap Hit $4.5 million

JVR started skating last week. He did not make the trip out West with the team for conditioning purposes. With that being said, JVR is still on track to return in a week and a half to two weeks. The Flyers will not rush him back, so we should not expect him back before then.
