Just as you thought things couldn’t get any more problematic for this Eagles team, the Birds have officially placed starting running back Jay Ajayi on injured reserve.

Leading the team in carries, rushing yards (184) and rushing touchdowns (3), Ajayi’s role has been marginalized due to an ongoing injury problem with his back. However, Sunday’s game saw a knee injury flare up, which would obviously cause concern given his worrying injury history with a torn ACL.

According to Ian Rapoport, it’s another torn ACL for the former Dolphins running back. A heartbreaking injury to a player who has battled durability concerns his whole career.

Ajayi’s absence will leave the Eagles extremely shorthanded at running back, especially if Darren Sproles remains sidelined and Corey Clement is less than 100%. Smallwood has risen to the challenge and Josh Adams has shown signs of progress, but nowhere near enough to balance an offense that rushed the ball 6 times in the first half on Sunday.

Help has to be on the way…but what can the Eagles do? We’ll have more later today.
